A single crochet decrease is used to decrease 2 single crochet stitches down to 1 single crochet stitch.  The way I prefer to do this is what's called an "invisible" decrease because it is more difficult to notice it as a decrease and it helps to keep 'holes' from showing especially when you're doing amigurumi.  See the instructions below for picture instructions.
