Baby Bunny Hat

Bunny Hat just in time for Easter!

A friend of mine recently purchased a baby's hat for a photo shoot, but the hat wasn't working out so she asked me if I could make one. I thought I'd give it a shot and I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out!

Luckily, being a yarn hoarder, I had some white and gray yarn on hand. The white yarn is Lion Brand Yarn - Vanna's Choice. The gray yarn is Lion Brand Yarn - Heartland and it's called Mount Rainier.

The ears have a front and back to help make them stiff with the added benefit of making it look good from the front or the back.

This hat takes very little time to make and is great for beginners.

The model (I'm crocheting Gerald!) has approximately a 14 inch head. The hat will also stretch if a little more room is needed.

Items Needed:

1 skein Lion Brand Yarn's Vanna's Choice Yarn - White

1 skein Lion Brand Yarn's Heartland - Mount Rainier

1 5mm crochet hook

1 4mm crochet hook

Abbreviations:

DC - Double Crochet

CH - Chain

Sl st - Slip Stitch

SC - Single Crochet

HDC - Half Double Crochet

Pattern: Body using 5mm hook

Using Color White - Make a Magic Ring

Row 1 - CH 2; 12 DC inside the ring; Sl st into the top of the first DC.

Row 2 - CH 2; DC into bottom of CH 2; (PIC) 2 DC in every stitch from row 1; Sl st into the top of the first DC.

Row 3 - CH 2; DC into bottom of CH 2; *1 DC in next stitch; 2 DC in next stitch*; repeat from * to *; end with DC in bottom of CH 2. (PIC)

Row 4 - CH 2; DC into bottom of CH 2; *1 DC in each of next 5 stitches; 2 DC in next stitch*; repeat from * to *; end with DC in bottom of CH 2.

Row 5 - CH 2; DC into bottom of CH 2: 1 DC in each of the next stitches; end with DC in bottom of CH 2.

Row 6-7 - Repeat Row 5.

Row 8 - CH 1; SC in each of the next stitches; Sl st into first SC. Fasten off.

Ears: Make 4 using the 4mm hook (Crochet into each chain one direction and then back into the chain the other direction) (PIC)

Using Color Mount Rainier - CH 10

Row 1 - SC into 2nd loop from hook; SC into each of next 3 chains; HDC into each of the next 4 chains; 2 DC into last chain (top of ear); HDC into each of the next 4 chains (going back down the chain); SC into each of the next 4 chains; Sl st into first SC.

Row 2 - Using color White - CH 1; SC into each of the next 3 stitches; HDC into each of the next 4 stitches; 2 DC into each of the next 4 stitches (top of the ear); HDC into each of the next 4 chains (going back down); SC into each of the next 4 stitches; Sl st into first SC.

Whip stitch 2 of these together (through 1 loop on each), back to back, so the right side is facing out on each side. Attach to the hat on the 2nd and 3rd rows, on each side. (To make them stand, it's best to attach on 1 side at a time.)

Eyes: Make 2 using 5mm hook

Using Color Mount Rainier - Make a Magic Ring

Row 1 - 6 SC into the ring; Sl st into the first SC. Fasten off leaving about 8 inches (used for attaching to body)

Attach to the hat on the 4th row, through 1 loop only.

Nose: using 5mm hook

Using Color Mount Rainier - CH 3

Row 1 - SC into 2nd loop from hook; SC in next stitch; turn.

Row 2 - CH 1; SC into bottom of CH 1; 2 SC in next stitch.

Edge - SC in each stitch around; 2 SC in each of the 3 corners (2 sides at top of nose; 1 at the bottom)

Attach to the hat on the 5th and 6th rows and backstitch as shown.

Or you can make it without the face. :}

What will you crochet today?
