Cute chevron style blanket
The Mom's group I belong to is partnering with the Community Roots Collective to collect dolls for dementia/Alzheimer patients at a local nursing home. What better to go with these dolls then some handmade crocheted doll blankets? I'm going to try to make as many as I can by May along with some other projects that I'm working on. Additionally, there are a few ladies in the group who want to learn how to crochet, so they may be able to get some done in that time as well!
The yarn for this blanket is Lion Brand Yarn's Ice Cream. How cute are these?! I might have to find a way to use all of the colors (I think I can manage it!) The yarn is 100% acrylic, machine washable and dryable. Yarn weight 3 with a 5mm crochet hook recommended. The colors used here are Grape and Mint.
The pattern is an easy to follow chevron using double crochet stitches.
The finished blanket is 20 inches high by 19 inches wide. Each 'chevron' is about 2 1/2 inches wide (2.62). The height of each row is about 1/2 an inch (.59). The edging adds 1/2 inch on each side.
To make this a 34 inch by 30 inch baby blanket you would need to make approximately 11 chevrons wide and 56 rows high and the edging will add 1/2 inch on each of the 4 sides. I believe you would not need additional skeins since this pattern already calls for 2 colors.
Items Needed:
1 5mm crochet hook
1 skein Lion Brand Yarn Ice Cream - Color Mint (A)
1 skein Lion Brand Yarn Ice Cream - Color Grape (B)
Blunt end yarn needle for weaving in ends
Abbreviations
CH - Chain
DC - Double Crochet
How to change color at the end of the row: Before finishing the final double crochet (first picture), pull through a loop of the new color (second picture), turn and continue with pattern (third picture).
Pattern:
With Color A - Chain 73
Row 1: DC into the 4th CH from hook; 1 DC in each of the next 3 stitches; skip 2 chains; *1 DC in each of the next 4 stitches; CH 2; 1 DC in each of the next 4 stitches; skip 2 chains* repeat from * to * 5 more times; 1 DC in each of the next 4 stitches; 1 DC in the same stitch as the last DC; turn.
Row 2: CH 3; 1 DC into bottom on CH 3; 1 DC in each of the next 3 stitches; skip 2 chains; *1 DC in each of the next 4 stitches; CH 2; 1 DC in each of the next 4 stitches; skip 2 chains* repeat from * to * 5 more times; 1 DC in each of the next 4 stitches; 1 DC in the same stitch as the last DC (remember to change color in last part of DC); fasten off color A; turn.
Row 3: Repeat row 2 for 2 rows with color B.
Every 2 rows change color. There are 32 rows to complete the blanket, ending with Color B. Cut yarn at end color change.
For the edge -
Using color B at the end of row 32 - CH 1; SC along the side - 2 SC in each row; SC, CH 2, SC in same stitch for each corner; slip stitch into first stitch to end.
Using color A - Add by pulling through a loop and CH 1; SC along the side - SC in each stitch in prior row; SC, CH 2, SC in CH 2 - SP in prior row; slip stitch into first stitch to end.
I crocheted over the new yarn end for each color change as I was making the blanket and then weaved them back in the opposite way after finishing the blanket. The cut ends I crocheted over while doing the edging. This cut down on weaving in a lot of ends.
What will you crochet today?
