The Secret to Crocheting with Boucle Yarn (Homespun, Bernat, Premier)

Updated: Mar 17, 2019

Have you tried crocheting with Boucle yarn? That lumpy bumpy kewl looking stuff that creates it's own texture and doesn't need a fancy stitch to look great. Have you tried it? Did you rip your hair out trying to figure out how in the world to keep it from endlessly snagging on your hook?

If you haven't had any problems then you must already be using the right hook, because the secret to crocheting with this yarn is to use an in-line crochet hook.

These are both size 10mm hooks. You can clearly see that the tapered hook is smaller, tapered. The in-line hook is much wider at the top. This picks up lumpy bumpy yarn like a breeze.

If you're using a tapered hook you probably hate boucle yarn. I'm telling you that boucle yarn is TERRIFIC. It works up quick and it makes it's own design and texture that is very appealing. Lion Brand in particular has some really nice colors and the Thick & Quick works up in no time. Don't take my word for it...just go look real quick...but come back :}

From what I've seen Boye makes the tapered hooks and Susan Bates makes in-line hooks. I'm not sure what the benefit is to using a tapered hook. Perhaps some people just prefer it. I enjoyed using it myself, but the in-line hooks can be used on every yarn type with ease while the tapered ones cannot.

So, if you want to enjoy crocheting with boucle yarn, and honestly bulkier yarns in general, find some Susan Bates crochet hooks and marvel at how easy it is to use.

What will you crochet today?
