Tide Throw/Blanket

Updated: Mar 18, 2019

I was having so much fun playing around with Bernat Alize Blanket EZ yarn that I decided to make another throw with it.

I really liked these colors separately so I decided to put them together in a throw. Together they started making me think of candy or Tide Pods :}

Bernat EZ Easy baby blanket throw

I'm not sure if that's good or bad but I do like the look of it!

The raised pattern makes the already soft yarn feel exceptionally plush. Also it makes this the blanket you'd pull out on a cold night if you make it large enough.

To hear more about the yarn, see my other post for the Ocean Waves Throw/Baby Blanket.

For this throw I used the Burgandy, Cream, and Seaport Teals colors.

Bernat EZ Easy baby blanket throw

Since I was designing a throw I did not make mine very large, but I will give you specifications to figure out how much yarn you will need of each color to make one the size you want. You can make a large blanket for your bed or the couch or a small throw or baby blanket.

Additionally, you can add more colors or make the zig zag more frequent. Once you read the instructions it will be simple to adjust the pattern exactly how you want it. It will simply be a matter of figuring out how much of each color yarn you will need and I will give you that information to figure it out.

Now, to the pattern!

The finished blanket is 27" wide by 30.5" high, so if you want a larger one you will need more of the main color.

You will need:

Scissors

Main Color - Cream (1 skein)

Secondary colors - Seaport Teals - (70% of 1 skein)

Burgundy - (40% of 1 skein)

That's it. No knitting needles!

Foundation:

To make the bottom look like the top I made a foundation row first. It's not necessary for actually holding the fabric together.

I started out with 40 loops for the foundation by joining those loops together.

This picture has some loops already connected so you can see the chain that it makes. Working right to left, take the working loop and insert it into the prior loop.

Pull working loop through

Repeat this until you have 40 loops, the last one won't be connected to anything yet.

Row 1: (Note: You never turn the work with this yarn.) With Seafoam Teals color, Going from left to right, pull a loop through the back loop only of the foundation row until you have 40 loops.

Row 2: (Note: In each row we will be crossing the prior row loops either left or right.) Add secondary color, cream. Working from right to left, take the working loop and pull it through the last loop in the prior row. (Start crossing) Take the next loop in the prior row and cross it (to the left) over the loop next to it. Do this for 40 loops (all the way across). In each row when you have a "spare" loop at the end or the beginning of the row you will just put a working loop straight through it.

Row 3: Change back to main color. You will cross the loops over in the same manner as row 2. The loops that were used to cross the prior row to the left will be crossed to the left and be on top. So, in each row it will always look like lines going to the left.

Row 4-12: Continue each row back and forth switching colors for each row. You can make this section as long as you'd like.

Row 13-29: Add new color, burgundy. You can add it from either side. The only difference is now you will make the loops that are on top go to the right instead of the left. Starting the chevron look.

Row 30-40: Switch back to first color. For the last rows at the top you will use the Seaport Teals color for 2 rows. The last row is then "chained" together to look like the foundation row. Cut the final loop at the top and tie the ends together.

Information for increasing the width or length:

Each skein is approximately 815 loops

4 inch width = 7 loops

4 inch height = 5 rows (excluding chain rows)

So for ever 4 inches you'd like in width you will need 7 loops and for every 4 inches in height you will need 5 rows.

For this project you would simply decide how wide and long you want it to be and make the calculations. Remember, anything larger than the one I made will require more than 1 skein of cream color.

For example: If you want a blanket that's 40 inches wide and 80 inches long it would be 70 loops wide by 100 rows high. (3.3 feet high by 6.6 feet high)

Let's say you want the beginning and end sections to be 27 rows. (An odd number of rows will give you a beginning and ending with the Seaport Teals color). 14 rows will be Seaport Teals color. (2 sections) 28 rows high by 70 loops wide would be 1,960 loops. So you would definitely need more than 2 skeins of the Seaport Teals color.

The middle section would be either 45 or 47 rows. (Half are Burgundy) 23 rows high by 70 loops wide would be 1,610 loops. Still only need 2 skeins, but any larger and you would need more.

For the cream color you would need 3,430 loops. That's 5 skeins.
